The Neptunes built half the sound of the 2000s on one partnership. Now the partnership is a docket number, and this week Pharrell's side filed to end it.
## What was filed Per HotNewHipHop's Erika Marie, Pharrell Williams asked the court on Oct. 6 to dismiss Chad Hugo's lawsuit. His attorney, Edwin F. McPherson, argues the copyright claims are too vague to answer. In the filing, as HNHH reports it, McPherson writes that Hugo "has no idea which compositions" he supposedly authored.
That's the defense's argument, not a finding. HNHH reports only the request to dismiss. We found no ruling.
## What Hugo is claiming Hugo sued in January, alleging Pharrell withheld earnings and financial records tied to The Neptunes and N.E.R.D. HNHH says the complaint put money from N.E.R.D.'s 2017 album No One Ever Really Dies at more than $1 million. The Source covered the March expansion of the case, and we have no new reporting on those allegations beyond what these outlets published.
## The part that matters to the motion Hugo's earlier complaint named eight songs. Per HNHH, he removed those titles from his latest filing. The current complaint names one: EarthGang's "U Gotta." Pharrell's lawyers say it's unclear whether Hugo is claiming the composition, the sound recording, or both. A copyright claim that can't say what it covers is the soft spot a motion like this goes after. Whether the court agrees is the open question.
## Why our audience should care Producer credit and producer pay are the oldest unresolved fight in the music. A duo that shaped a decade splits, and one of them is now in court arguing about what he can prove he made. We broke down how the Neptunes' Korg Triton drums ran radio for a reason: the sound is the asset, and the paperwork behind a sound decides who gets paid on it.
## The read Nothing is decided. One side says the claims are too fuzzy to answer, the other says money was held back. Watch for Hugo's response to the dismissal request.
