A free sound source with keys, strings and synths built on physical modeling, in every plugin format a Mac or Windows producer needs. That's the short version of Player 2.0.
## What shipped Bedroom Producers Blog reports that Applied Acoustics Systems released AAS Player 2.0 on Oct. 1. It's free, and it runs as AU, VST, VST3 and AAX on macOS 10.13 and up and Windows 10 and up. The starter pack carries more than 650 sounds, with more presets arriving as you add sound packs.
## What's new from version 1 The interface is larger and cleaner, with dual graphic displays. The browser was rebuilt with filters, so finding a patch doesn't mean scrolling a list. And version 1 had no parameter editing at all; 2.0 gives each patch a small set of adjustable controls pulled from the full instruments. AAS says the sounds come from the same physical-modeling technology as its paid instruments, including Lounge Lizard EP-5, Ultra Analog VA-3 and Strum GS-2.
## What costs money The player and the starter library are free. The extra sound packs are paid, and per BPB they're 50 percent off through Oct. 27. You don't need to buy anything to use the 650 sounds.
## Why it matters to a beat maker Electric piano, plucked strings and analog-style synths are the bones of a lot of beats. A modeled instrument stays small on disk and reacts to how you play it, so the same patch doesn't sound pasted in. Free doesn't mean you'll keep it, but the download costs you nothing and the 650 sounds are there to audition. We haven't tested the library. Judge it against your own drum bus, not our word.
