Eleven years after it shipped, the oldest big-world RPG in the room just had its biggest night. Not a sale night. A players-online night.
## The number TweakTown, citing SteamDB, has The Witcher 3 peaking at 120,975 concurrent players on Sept. 29, the day the Remastered upgrade went live. The old record was 103,329, set in January 2020. Kotaku had it past 120,000 and still climbing when it filed, so the final peak could sit a little higher than the figure above.
## Why this launch pulled harder Two things stacked. The Remastered upgrade is free for people who already own the game, so the whole back catalog of owners had a reason to reinstall. And per Kotaku, the base game was half off at launch, which gave everyone who never bought it a reason to start. Kotaku also points out that Steam was a smaller store in 2020, especially in markets like China, and that the 2023 next-gen console update never came near these numbers.
## What the number can't tell you Concurrent players is a snapshot of who's online at the same minute. It's Steam only. It doesn't count console players on PS5, Xbox or Switch 2, and it isn't a sales figure. A free upgrade brings back people who already paid CD Projekt years ago. It's a loyalty number as much as a growth number. Both are good news. They're just different news.
## Where it sits with the reviews We covered the report card already: the reviews were strong and the handheld numbers came with asterisks. The record is the other half of that story. Critics grade it. The player count votes on it.
## The cultural read Single-player RPG fans get told all the time that the genre is niche. A game from 2015 just outdrew every day it's ever had on the biggest PC storefront. That's not niche. That's a standard people keep measuring new games against, and this week the standard set its own bar again.
