Two Words at MetLife. Seven Stadiums Gone.

The promoter says venues refused to host a show with Macklemore on the bill. Macklemore says the Patriots owner rallied other stadium owners into an ultimatum. Update: Kraft has since confirmed he barred him from Gillette.

Two shows at MetLife. Two words from the stage. Seven stadiums gone by Monday morning.

## What happened Rolling Stone broke it Monday: Macklemore is off the rest of Ed Sheeran's U.S. Loop Tour. Messina Touring Group, the promoter on the U.S. leg, said venues on the upcoming dates "will not allow a concert to take place with Macklemore on the lineup," which would have meant cancelling the tour outright, and that "after discussions with stakeholders, Macklemore will not be performing on the remaining support dates." Per Stereogum, that covers Lincoln Financial Field in Philly, Gillette in Foxborough, Mercedes-Benz in Atlanta, Lucas Oil in Indy, Bank of America in Charlotte, AT&T in Arlington and Raymond James in Tampa. Seven NFL buildings.

The trigger was Labor Day weekend. Opening both MetLife nights, September 4 and 5, Macklemore said "Free Palestine" from the stage, put the flag on the screens and performed "Hind's Hall." The Israeli American Council launched a petition asking Sheeran to drop him. Pink shared a post criticizing him and caught her own backlash for it. That was the noise. The removal is the consequence.

## Macklemore's version Within the hour he posted a long statement on Instagram (@macklemore), and the name in it is the story. Per Consequence and Variety, he says Sheeran told him last Monday that Patriots owner Robert Kraft called, said Macklemore would not be allowed to perform at Gillette, and "rallied some of the other stadium owners" into a collective ultimatum: keep him on the tour and you don't play our buildings. In his words, Sheeran "was in a fucked up position," and told him the phrase and the flag were "hurtful to a lot of people he spoke with."

Update, 2:30 p.m. PT: Kraft has now spoken. In a statement to TMZ, GBH and the Boston Globe he confirms he barred Macklemore from the Gillette dates over what he calls hate speech, and he does not dispute the call to Sheeran or the ultimatum. As of Monday morning the Kraft account was Macklemore's alone. The promoter's statement names no owners, and TMZ carried the same claim without confirmation.

He also said the quiet part about scale: he's been saying the same thing on his own stages for three years, and it only became a firing offense when the stage was a stadium. "I didn't need 10 shows from Ed. I needed 2," he wrote, and closed with the thing he got dropped for.

## Why this is a hip-hop story Not because of Macklemore's discography. Because of who decides who gets the stage. The people who own NFL stadiums also own a chunk of the touring business, and this is the first time in a while we've watched that leverage get used in the open against a rapper for what he said, not what he did. It lands in a week where Colin Kaepernick is still on podcasts calling Jay-Z's Yankee Stadium freestyle a "guilty conscience" over the NFL deal. Kraft co-founded REFORM Alliance with Meek Mill and Jay-Z in 2019. The league and the culture have been in business together for years now, and business has terms.

"Hind's Hall" went No. 1 on iTunes in 2024 with every dollar pledged to UNRWA. The song was never the problem. The room was.

## What's next Sheeran plays Philly, Foxborough, Atlanta, Indy, Charlotte, Arlington and Tampa without him. Kraft has answered (here). Whether Sheeran addresses it from the stage, and whether another act on any of those bills picks up the two words are the three things worth watching this week.
