Resident Evil: $45M–$60M Opening Tracked

The franchise's best domestic opening ever is $26.6 million. The Weapons director's take, opening Sept. 18 in 3,500-plus theaters, is tracking to double it. Reviews are still under embargo.

Six Paul W.S. Anderson movies and a 2021 reboot never got Resident Evil past $26.6 million on an opening weekend. Zach Cregger's version, out Friday, is tracking to clear that number by Saturday morning.

## The number SlashFilm, citing Box Office Theory, has the latest domestic opening range at $45 million to $60 million. That's up from Deadline's earlier $35 million to $50 million, and way up from Boxoffice Pro's $30 million to $40 million long-range call in August. Tracking has moved in one direction for a month. The film opens Friday, Sept. 18, in more than 3,500 theaters.

## What it is Not a direct adaptation. Austin Abrams plays Bryan, a medical courier, in a one-night survival story set inside the game universe. Zach Cherry, Kali Reis and Paul Walter Hauser co-star. Sony's Columbia distributes with Constantin, the company that has owned the film rights since the first movie. Cregger comes off Weapons, which did $270 million worldwide on roughly a $40 million budget and won an Oscar, and he opened Sony's Sept. 3 State of Play with an exclusive clip, which GameSpot noted was the first time a movie led a PlayStation showcase.

## What we don't know yet Reviews. The embargo hadn't lifted as of Tuesday morning and there's no Rotten Tomatoes score. For a filmmaker whose last two movies were review-driven hits, that's the swing variable: a fresh score Thursday night pushes this toward the top of the range, a mixed one pulls it toward the bottom.

## Why it matters past the box office Capcom is having a year. Onimusha sold a million copies on day one earlier this month, and now a prestige horror director is treating Capcom's biggest IP like a real movie instead of a Milla Jovovich vehicle. Game-to-film has spent thirty years as a punchline. Between Super Mario, Five Nights, Minecraft and now this, the punchline is over, and the studios that own the deepest game catalogs, Sony included, are about to act like it.
