Everybody knows the date by now. October 20, Netflix, ten episodes, new crew. What hasn't gotten enough air is why the show is going to look and feel different, and the people making it have been fairly specific.
## The pitch Bartosz Sztybor, who wrote and produced the first season and runs this one, told Anime Corner he pitched the sequel to Trigger as something closer to '90s crime films: Pulp Fiction, Léon: The Professional. Director Kai Ikarashi, who handled episode six of season one and takes the whole show this time, said the team based the character designs on '90s comics. So: heavier line work, a grittier palette, dialogue-driven scenes between the violence. Hiroyuki Imaishi's season one was a neon sprint. This is being built as a slower burn with the same body count.
Sztybor has also been open that working with Ikarashi is a different process than working with Imaishi. That's not a knock. It's the reason CD Projekt keeps saying "standalone story," not "season two."
## Who's in it Roman Carax, a kid filming the worst of Night City. Talia Yang, an ex-corpo running with Maelstrom. D, a Snake Nation netrunner on a revenge tip. Weak Kingsley, a vet who can't leave the past. Clancy Brown voices Weak in the English dub, Wendee Lee casts and directs the dub again, and the story is billed as "revenge and redemption." None of season one's characters carry over. David and Lucy's story is finished, and the show is honoring that by not touching it.
## Why the '90s framing matters for this crowd The audience that grew up on Léon and Pulp Fiction is the same audience that made Edgerunners a phenomenon in 2022: late-20s to mid-40s, raised on VHS crime movies and Toonami. A Night City story told in that register is aimed straight at them. It's also a smart hedge. Season one's style was so specific that copying it would have looked like a cover band. Changing the film reference changes the show without changing the city.
## The calendar October 20 on Netflix. A new Polygon feature on the director's approach surfaced this morning; read it before taping for any fresh quotes. The Edgerunners: Hunted board game ships this month, and Cyberpunk 2077 leaves Xbox Game Pass on Tuesday, September 15 (PC Game Pass keeps it), so the anime bounce lands on owned copies, which is exactly what CD Projekt wants.
