Fivio Foreign: No Sex Before Marriage

Rehab in December, a gospel single in July, a baptism in August. On Sept. 17 the Brooklyn drill pioneer posted the part of the journey he says is the hardest, and the timeline lit up.

The man who made "Big Drip" is celibate, and he wants you to know it isn't easy.

## The post Thursday, September 17, on X: "No sex before marriage is the hardest part of my walk with Jesus by farrrrr." That's the whole thing. XXL picked it up Friday and it ran across the aggregators through the weekend, half the replies clowning, half of them saying amen.

## The timeline This didn't come out of nowhere. In December, Fivio announced he was going to rehab: "I wanna live and I wanna stop making a lot of dumb decisions and a lot of dumb mistakes that I been making." In late July he pivoted to gospel with "Chasin," a record with The Fire Choir where he raps about opening the Bible for nourishment and praying to be used for encouragement. In August he got baptized in a pool, white robes around him, gospel playing, and posted the video. September is the abstinence post. The arc has been public at every step, which is the point. He's testifying, not confessing.

## Why it lands Brooklyn drill was built on Fivio's voice and Pop Smoke's, and Pop has been gone since 2020. Fivio carried the sound into Kanye's Donda and a Nicki feature and then hit the wall every rapper in that scene eventually hits: the cases, the pressure, the "who's next" energy. A drill artist saying out loud that he's trying to stay sober, stay faithful, and stay alive is countercultural in his own lane. The jokes will happen. Rappers turning to church is a genre trope, DMX to Ye and back. What's rarer is one saying the hard part in real time instead of after the fact.

## The take We're not here to grade anybody's walk. But an artist who three years ago was the loudest voice in the loudest scene in New York is now posting about restraint, and people are reading every word. That's influence he didn't have when he was just the guy on the hook. Whether a gospel-drill record can actually move is a separate question, and "Chasin" didn't answer it yet.
