Netflix x SEGA: Stranger Than Heaven, Crazy Taxi, Sonic

A three-IP deal announced Sept. 14: a live-action Stranger Than Heaven film from the Like a Dragon studio's Snoop-and-Tupac prequel, a Crazy Taxi movie from the Naked Gun writers, and a new Sonic animated series for kids.

Netflix and SEGA announced three projects on Monday. The one the general press led with is Sonic. The one this audience should care about is the other one.

## The deal Per Variety and Gematsu: a live-action Stranger Than Heaven film produced by SEGA's Toru Nakahara; a Crazy Taxi movie written by Dan Gregor and Doug Mand (last year's The Naked Gun) and produced by Original Film's Neal H. Moritz and Toby Ascher; and a new Sonic the Hedgehog animated series aimed at what Netflix calls an "upper pre-school" audience, developed with Carlos Stevens and Nakahara. No dates on any of them. Final Weapon reports Crazy Taxi as theatrical with the other two on Netflix; Variety and Gematsu frame all three as Netflix projects, so hold that detail loosely.

## Why Stranger Than Heaven is the story Stranger Than Heaven is Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio's period prequel to the Yakuza / Like a Dragon universe, set in postwar Japan, and it launches Jan. 15, 2027 on PS5, Xbox and PC, day one on Game Pass. Snoop Dogg voices a smuggler and mentor figure named Orpheus. Tupac appears in the game. The theme song is Ado with Snoop, Tori Kelly and Sosuke Fujihara, which Automaton covered when it landed and Billboard treated as a music story, correctly. Final Weapon notes the game has cleared a million Steam wishlists, RGG's biggest pre-launch number ever.

So Netflix just greenlit a live-action film of a Japanese crime game whose cultural hook is West Coast rap. Whether Snoop or the Tupac estate carry over to the movie is unannounced, but the game's identity is built on them, and a studio doesn't option this IP for the swordfights.

## The Sonic piece Sonic already has three Paramount films and Netflix's Sonic Prime. A preschool series is Netflix buying the youngest possible audience for a character SEGA has kept in front of every age bracket for 35 years. Fine. It's the least interesting of the three and it'll be the most watched.

## The Crazy Taxi piece A movie about a 1999 arcade game whose entire plot is "drive fast, The Offspring is playing" from the writers who just rebooted The Naked Gun, is the right level of self-awareness. It's also SEGA and Netflix betting that Gen X and older millennials will buy a ticket for the sound of that soundtrack alone. They're probably right.
