Wrong Number. Cudi Writes, Directs, Stars, Scores.

Deadline reported Sept. 11 that Cudi's second feature as a director is filming in Los Angeles with Barbie Ferreira, before his first one has even come out.

Scott Mescudi has been telling us he's a filmmaker since Entergalactic. Thursday, Deadline confirmed the second act: Wrong Number, a horror thriller Cudi wrote, is directing, is starring in and will score, is already shooting in Los Angeles. HotNewHipHop had it the same day.

The setup

Cudi plays a successful self-help author whose new relationship curdles into a stalker situation and a murder accusation. Barbie Ferreira (Euphoria, Nope) is the other lead. Lucy Barrett, Dewayne Perkins, Clifton Powell and Laura Harrier round out the cast. It's produced through Cudi's own Mad Solar, which means the score, the script and the company banner all belong to him.

Cudi teased this in August as "a horror thriller with comedy mixed in" and said he wanted both of his directorial features out in 2027. The first one, Doe, wrapped earlier this year: a drama he also wrote and stars in, about a man moving through homelessness and addiction over 24 hours in L.A., with Mark Webber, Leah McNamara, Brandon Scott and Brandon Perea.

The bigger pattern

Rappers have directed before. Few have stacked two features back to back through their own production company while still touring. The lane Cudi's running is closer to what Donald Glover built with Gilga than to the cameo-and-producer-credit route most artists take. He's been acting steadily, too: Ti West's X films, Knuckles, and a lead in the upcoming supernatural thriller Pathetic Fallacy with Jessica Rothe and Natasha Lyonne.

The ownership angle is the point. A horror thriller with a Black lead, Black writer-director, and a Black-owned production company on the card, financed and shot fast, is the kind of package Hollywood usually needs a studio "champion" to greenlight. Cudi skipped the wait.

Dates

No release date for Wrong Number yet. Cudi's own target is late summer 2027, with Doe landing earlier in the year.
