Six years between albums, three days between the announcement and the release, and twelve years and ten months between her first chart appearance and her first No. 1. Jhené Aiko didn't chase this. It came to her.
## The numbers Billboard reported it Sunday, September 20: Westside Whimsy debuts at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 dated September 26 with 74,000 equivalent album units in the week ending September 17, per Luminate. Streaming did almost all of it: 70,000 of those units are SEA, which works out to 71.33 million on-demand official streams. Album sales were 3,500. Track-equivalent units were 500. Physical copies don't even ship until January, so this is a pure-streaming No. 1 in a week when the album was only available digitally.
Complex notes the early projection had it opening around 62,000. She beat the forecast by 12,000 units with no rollout, no single cycle, no tour behind it.
## Why this one is different Chilombo came in at No. 2 in 2020 and picked up an Album of the Year nomination. Sail Out debuted at No. 8 in November 2013. Every project in between cracked the top 10. What she never had was the top spot, and R&B women have barely had it either. Westside Whimsy is the first album by a female R&B artist to lead the Billboard 200 in 2026, and the first R&B album by a woman to sit at No. 1 since SZA's SOS finished its 13th and final week up there in May 2025. Bruno Mars' The Romantic is the only other R&B album to hit No. 1 this year.
Billboard's own comparison: the last woman who waited longer for a first No. 1 was Solange, who went 13 years and 8 months before A Seat at the Table did it in 2016. That's the company Aiko is in now: West Coast, patient, on her own clock.
## The record itself Twenty tracks, released September 11 through Def Jam. Kendrick Lamar is on "So Good," their first record together since the Sail Out era. Ab-Soul lands on "Love Bomb," Tyga on "Like, Whatever," Larry June on "Neighbors," and OHMA closes it on "Golden Coast." That's a TDE-and-neighbors guest list, an LA album made by LA people, which is exactly what the title says. ## The take The week's other big hip-hop debut was a rap EP projected in the teens. Jhené moved 74,000 with a record announced on a Tuesday and out on a Friday. The audience that grew up on Souled Out and Trip is still here, still streaming, and still shows up for a full-length that doesn't beg. In an R&B year where the men have gotten the No. 1s, an Inglewood woman with a Kendrick verse and no singles campaign took the chart. That's the story.
