Label this one clearly: rumor. But it's a Bloomberg rumor, and it's about the two biggest checkbooks in gaming.
On September 10, Bloomberg reported that Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund is weighing a merger of Electronic Arts with Savvy Games Group, the PIF's own gaming arm. GamingBolt (@GamingBolt) picked it up Thursday. Per the report's anonymous sources, no decision has been made, and the PIF is likely waiting to close its roughly $6 billion buyout of the rest of Savvy first.
What would be under one roof
EA: Madden, EA Sports FC, College Football, Battlefield, The Sims, Apex. Savvy: Scopely, which owns Pokémon GO and Monopoly GO!, plus ESL FACEIT. That's the biggest sports-sim catalog in the world next to the biggest mobile earners in the world, owned by a sovereign wealth fund. The stated logic is coordination: EA has been cutting mobile projects, and Savvy already has the mobile machine.
The money trail
The EA deal closed in August at about $55 billion. The PIF holds 93.4 percent, Silver Lake 5.5, Affinity Partners 1.1. It was a leveraged buyout, so EA is carrying real debt now, and CEO Andrew Wilson has promised to "invest boldly." A merger would be one way to make that debt look smaller on paper.

Why our audience should care
Madden and 2K are the two games that live on the same couch as the music. When the company that makes Madden gets folded into a fund whose stated goal is Vision 2030 economic diversification, the soundtrack deals, the athlete likenesses, the esports circuit and the microtransaction strategy all answer to a different boss. Members of Congress already asked the FTC to look harder at the EA buyout. A merger of this size would invite every antitrust regulator on earth, which is the main reason it's still a "weighing," not a "doing."
Status
Unconfirmed. No timeline. The next hard signal is the Savvy buyout closing.
