Nike put a date on the Tom Sachs x NikeCraft General Purpose Shoe "Demerits" on Monday, September 21: September 30, $120, SNKRS and select retailers, style code FZ1363-002. Sneaker Bar Detroit ran the official images that afternoon. It is a black perforated leather upper, white Swooshes, Team Royal pull tabs on the tongue and heel, and a gum outsole, which is the cleanest the GPS has looked since the original 2022 run. It is also the clearest signal yet that Nike's 2023 pause with Sachs is fully over, and nobody at Beaverton is going to say so out loud.
The shoe
The General Purpose Shoe was always the accessible half of the Sachs program: the $110 daily driver for people who could never get a Mars Yard. Sole Retriever had this pair in official images on September 18 and lists the full colorway as Black/White-Team Royal-Team Orange-Gum Dark Brown, unisex sizing, with the aftermarket already sitting around $154 before a single pair has shipped. Nice Kicks has it for the same $120 and the same September 30 date.
"Demerits" follows the "Bricolage" GPS from April, and SBD notes a "Loser Shoe" variant used at Sachs' I.S.R.U. camp. The name fits the Sachs studio language: everything is a grade, a punishment or a piece of paperwork. The shoe itself does not change. Same last, same simple pattern, same idea that a sneaker should look like something you would buy at a hardware store.
The part Nike does not put in the press release
Sole Retriever puts the backstory plainly: the collaboration went quiet after "public pressure in the wake of an article detailing Sachs' controversial treatment of artists employed at his studio." That was the 2023 Curbed report on the working conditions inside the Sachs studio, and Nike paused the partnership. It came back with the Mars Yard 3.0 and a clothing capsule, then Bricolage, and now this.
That timeline matters because Nike is very selective about which partners get a second act. Sachs got one. Plenty of Black designers who never had a labor complaint against them never got a first act at this scale, and the ones who did, from Don C to Chris Gibbs to the Whitaker Group, had to earn each drop from scratch. The GPS is a good shoe. It is also a reminder of who the Swoosh forgives.
Why $120 is the whole point
A $120 Nike collab in 2026 is rare. The Mowalola 14 was $250, the Space Jam 9 was $225, the CDG 11 was north of that. Sachs' pitch has always been utility over hype, and pricing the GPS below a General Release Jordan 1 is the one place the pitch is honest. Resale at $154 says the market agrees; it will get bought, worn and beat up, which is what the shoe was designed for.
If you missed the 2022 pairs, this is the one to get. The black leather hides wear better than the original tan suede, and the gum sole is the right call.
The take
The GPS does what the Air Force 1 did before it: a plain shoe with no story on the upper that lets the wearer bring the story. That has always been a Black idea about sneakers, from Harlem in 1982 to the Bronx in 2026, and it is why a $120 NikeCraft shoe sells to people who could not tell you who Tom Sachs is. Nike knows that. The question is whether the credit, and the second chances, ever flow the other direction.
Set the alarm for September 30. It will not be a hard cop, and that is the point.
