TL;DR
Square Enix closed the September 3 State of Play with the biggest card in the deck: Final Fantasy VII Revelation — the third and final chapter of the Remake project — launches April 8, 2027 on PS5, with Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2 and PC to follow. Roughly ten minutes of new gameplay came with it.
What the deep dive showed
This is the story, not the date. You fly the Highwind yourself — it's exploration, not a cutscene — and you can jump off it and skydive into regions. Wutai, Yuffie's homeland, got an extended look. Chocobo combat is a thing now. The new FITS class system reworks how party members build, and the showcase ran through each character's kit one by one.
It's the open-world half of the original game, which was always the part Remake's structure couldn't touch. Rebirth opened the map. Revelation gives you the sky.
Why it matters
The original FF7 came out in 1997. The Remake project started in 2020. Somebody who played the first game on a PlayStation at twelve is going to finish this trilogy at 42. That's our audience exactly. It's also the biggest single-player RPG of 2027 by a distance, unless something we haven't seen surfaces.
The gamescom Opening Night Live premiere trailer was the most-watched of that entire show, and State of Play's extended cut is pulling the same kind of numbers. On the YouTube view metric this is the top of the RPG lane right now.
The take
Seven months. Play Rebirth if you skipped it — it's the best in the series since the PS1 — and clear April. This is the one.
