MBJ: 'Make Anime the Rest of My Life.'

In his Vogue October cover story, the Sinners Oscar winner said he has more than one anime project in early development and, only half-joking, that he could leave Hollywood to make anime full time. The anime press noticed before the film press did.

The most decorated Black actor of this decade just told the fashion press his exit plan is anime. The anime press took three days to catch it. We'll take it from here.

## What he said Michael B. Jordan's Vogue October cover story, written by Kelefa Sanneh and posted Sept. 16, has the line, as quoted by HelloBeautiful: "I might just quit it all and make anime the rest of my life." Vogue's reporter frames him as "only half-joking," and reports more than one anime project in early development. No titles, studios, formats or dates are public, per OtakuKart. He also says he plans to step back after promoting The Thomas Crown Affair (March 5, 2027, which he directed, produced and stars in): "I'll probably take the rest of next year off."

## Receipts on the fandom This isn't a celebrity discovering anime for a press cycle. Jordan told Vogue he used to sneak into the basement of his New Jersey church to watch Dragon Ball Z. He starred as Julian Chase in Rooster Teeth's anime-styled gen:LOCK, produced through his company Outlier Society. He has evangelized My Hero Academia to other actors on camera for Vanity Fair. The man who won Best Actor in March for the dual role in Sinners has been telling you this for years.

## Why it matters here Black anime fandom has spent two decades being the audience and almost never the producer. The Boondocks, Yasuke, Cannon Busters, Megan Thee Stallion's Prime Video project: the list of Black-led anime or anime-adjacent productions is short enough to count on one hand. An Oscar winner with a production company, a Creed franchise and a Warner Bros. relationship saying he wants to spend the back half of his career on it is a different scale of entry. Even "early development" from Outlier Society is a real seat at a table that rarely has one.

## The read Half-joking is still half-serious. Jordan has the leverage most Black creators in animation never get, and he's telling Vogue, not a convention panel, where he wants to spend it. Watch for a studio partner announcement after Thomas Crown opens; that's when "in development" starts having names.
