Free Emulator Week: Three Grails, Zero Dollars

September 21 was a bumper day for free hardware emulators: an open-source Yamaha FS1R, a Nord Modular G1 running its real OS, and Joe Landers' Korg Prophecy, all alpha, all free. What a producer should actually download.

Synth Anatomy called Monday "a bumper day for emulators." For a beatmaker that translates to: three pieces of hardware you'd pay four figures for on Reverb are now free, if you can live with alpha software.

## Yamaha FS1R, emulated, no ROM needed The FS1R was a 1998 rack: eight-operator FM plus a formant-shaping oscillator nobody else had, which is why it's a cult unit and why nobody's cloned it until now. Musica.Studio's FSVR is open source, runs on Mac, Windows and Linux as standalone, VST3 and CLAP, and doesn't need the original chip's ROM; the developer rebuilt the engine from decompiled firmware. It already has all 88 algorithms and DX7 patch conversion. It's early alpha, it doesn't sound 100 percent like the box yet, and the developer says so. (Synth Anatomy)

## Nord Modular G1, running its real OS Animatek's G1-Emu boots the actual Nord Modular rack OS 3.03 on emulated Motorola hardware, built on The Usual Suspects' Gearmulator. The G1 was a hardware modular you patched from a computer; the emulator works the same way, so you need an editor (Animatek's own NME is open source). Super early alpha, bugs promised, but the OS boots, the editor connects and patches upload. (Synth Anatomy)

## Korg Prophecy Joe Landers' Profligacy runs the 1995 Prophecy's original ROM, so you need to own the hardware firmware. It's the mono physical-modeling synth Korg built to answer Yamaha's VL1. Alpha, heavy on CPU. If you just want the sound in a session, Korg's own Prophecy plugin from 2021 is polyphonic and finished; this one is for the people who want the real chip logic. ## The rule for your session Alpha means don't build a client record on it. Do build a sound library on it: bounce patches to audio, name them, keep them. The FS1R formant pads and the G1's logic-gate sequences are textures the big plugin companies haven't bothered to sell you. This week they're free. Bonus, from the same run: the Elektron MachineDrum emulator now runs in a browser tab, no install.
