The M8 is the tracker that turned a Game Boy workflow into a real instrument. It costs more than a PS5. As of this week you can get the whole thing for the price of a sample pack.
## What dropped Per Synth Anatomy on Sept. 15, Dirtywave put the full M8 engine on the App Store as M8 Music Tracker for iPhone and iPad, $29.99. Not a lite version. Same eight monophonic tracks, up to 128 instruments per song, and the five engines the hardware ships with: Wavsynth (chip-style wavetables), Macrosynth (the Mutable Instruments oscillator set, 40-plus modes), a four-operator FM synth, the Hypersynth swarm, and the sampler with playback and recording. Scales, grooves, probability, instrument tables, MIDI instruments for outboard gear. All of it.
Portrait or landscape. Built-in help on every screen. CoreMIDI in and out, so a controller works, and so does a computer keyboard or a game pad if you want it to feel like the box.
## The part producers will care about Projects, instruments, samples and rendered audio live in the Files app, and bundles are fully compatible with the hardware. Start a beat on the train, finish it on the M8 at home, or the reverse. On the hardware that's a microSD shuffle; here it's just a folder.
What it doesn't do: AUv3. Dirtywave says Apple's plugin sandboxing would mean duplicating gigabytes of samples between the app and the plugin, so it's standalone only, with Inter-App Audio as the consolation. If your whole workflow is loading instruments inside Logic on the iPad, this isn't that. It's the M8, in your pocket, as its own thing.
## Why it matters for the beat business The M8 built its reputation on speed. Trackers are hex columns and keyboard shortcuts, which looks hostile and plays fast once it's in your hands; the people who love it are the ones who sketch a drum idea in ninety seconds and never open a menu. The hardware's price kept most beatmakers watching YouTube demos instead. Thirty dollars removes that excuse. Same engine, same sound, same files. The headless build on a $50 handheld was already the budget door; this is the front door.
## The read If you already own the box, this is a $30 second seat. If you've been curious, this is the cheapest that curiosity is ever going to be. Either way it's a hip-hop tool now, not a chiptune one. Loop a vocal, chop it in the sampler, run the Macrosynth bass under it, bounce it to Files, drag it into the session. Done before the bus stops.
