Logan Lands At Seventy-Seven.

Marvel's Wolverine launches Tuesday, Sept. 15. The embargo lifted Thursday with a 77 Metascore, sixes from IGN and GameSpot, and praise for the story over the combat.

The review embargo on Marvel's Wolverine lifted Thursday, September 10, at 8 AM PT. By afternoon Kotaku (@Kotaku) had the number: a 77 Metascore across 106 reviews, the lowest of any PlayStation Studios game on PS5, under Sackboy's 79. The game launches Tuesday, September 15, at $69.99 standard, $79.99 Digital Deluxe.

## What critics agree on Liam McIntyre's Logan, the character writing, and the presentation are getting near-universal praise. The combat is where it falls apart for the big outlets: IGN, GameSpot, GamesRadar, Eurogamer and VGC all landed on 6/10, Giant Bomb on 5, most of them using some version of "dated" and "a linear third-person action game from 2008." Game Informer went 8.5. Kotaku's own review called it "refreshingly straightforward... mostly." A wave of smaller international sites gave 9s and 10s, which Metacritic weights down.

For context: Spider-Man 87, Miles Morales 85, Spider-Man 2 90. Wolverine is Insomniac's lowest-scoring original since Song of the Deep in 2016.

## Should you buy it If you're in it for Logan and a tight 15-hour story with no open-world checklist, the consensus says yes, and the M rating means Insomniac finally got to make the version of this character people asked for. If you're expecting Spider-Man 2's combat depth, wait for a sale; Kotaku's writer said the same. The ending already leaked online last week, so stay off the timeline until Tuesday if you care.

## The bigger picture Sony needed a hit this fall. Wolverine was supposed to be the PS5's answer to a year where Xbox landed Halo on PlayStation and just took Physint from Kojima. A 77 isn't a disaster. It's the game that was supposed to carry September turning out to be fine. GTA 6 on November 19 is the actual tentpole, and everybody at Sony knows it.
