Attack on Titan Is Back. Nothing New Is Coming.

Kodansha turned September 9 into a registered holiday and hung two re-released films, a game and 99 drops off it. Isayama owns the story; the committee owns the day.

Attack on Titan Returns With Zero New Episodes

Three years after the finale, Attack on Titan is back on the calendar. Not on the screen with anything new, but on the calendar, and the difference is the whole story. Kodansha got the Japan Anniversary Association to certify September 9 as Attack on Titan Day, tied to the manga's 2009 debut in Bessatsu Shonen Magazine, and then hung 99 announcements off the number nine. Read the fine print and the pattern is clear: this is a rights holder running the catalog, not a studio running new pages.

What is actually returning

Two compilation films, both already released. Attack on Titan Part 1: Guren no Yumiya, the Season 1 recut, goes back into Japanese theaters October 23, 2026 in ScreenX, 4DX and ULTRA 4DX. The Last Attack, the 145-minute stitch of the final two episodes, follows in 2027 as the franchise's first ScreenX run. ScreenRant's report, which kicked off the current wave of coverage, is blunt about the shape of it: "Eren's story may be over," and everything on this slate agrees. CBR adds that, as of now, both revivals are Japan-only, with Hulu and Crunchyroll still the streaming homes stateside.

Who owns the walls

Look at the copyright line on the official Attack on Titan Day portal: Hajime Isayama and Kodansha, then the "ATTACK ON TITAN" Production Committee, then the Final Season committee. Isayama's name is on every line, which matters; he did the work and the paper says so. But the committee model is what decides where money moves. MAPPA animates the films and the new opening for Koei Tecmo's Attack on Titan 3, out December 10. The partner list Anime Corner pulled from the 99 drops reads like a trade show floor: Good Smile, Kotobukiya, Sanrio, MSI, Team Liquid, Round1. In the US, Sony handled The Last Attack in theaters. The manga chapters unlocked free for 99 hours live on Kodansha's own Magazine Pocket app, so even the giveaway drives traffic to the owner's storefront.

Why now, in dollars

The compilation films are proven product. The Numbers has The Last Attack at $22.5 million worldwide, $3.6 million of that domestic on a February 2025 Sony release, for a movie that contained zero unseen footage. Kodansha does not need a Season 5 to keep the lane paying. It needs a reason to rebook theaters, and a government-adjacent anniversary registry is a cheaper reason than a new production. Line up the launch of a franchise YouTube channel, a Japan-locked weekly Season 1 stream and a voice-cast livestream, and you have a full quarter of engagement built entirely on back catalog.

Isayama, off the clock

The one genuinely new thing is a commemorative Eren and Levi illustration from Isayama himself, plus a life update that is the least Titan thing possible: he says he is deep into rom-com manga right now. That is a creator who finished his book, got his name on the copyright, and stepped off the treadmill. The machine kept running without him. That is the split our audience knows from the music business: the artist can leave, the masters keep touring.

The read

Attack on Titan's return is a licensing calendar wearing a franchise's clothes. Nothing on it is bad; the films play, the game looks serious, the free chapters are a real gift. But when the only new product is a date on a registry, be honest about who the celebration is for. Isayama owns the story. Kodansha and the committee own the day.

Built for the culture. Operated from San Diego. Run by PHRHX through Sneakz & Beatz LLC. Black-owned, four pillars: sneakers, hip-hop, anime, gaming.
