Some games you wait on. This one the whole world lined up for at the same time.
## October 2, and everybody already voted Ghost of Yotei launches October 2, 2026, on PS5. Before it even shipped it was the most pre-ordered game of the year in the US, Japan, Europe and the UK. That's not a region getting hyped. That's the planet agreeing on the same thing at once, which almost never happens anymore.
## The setup You play Atsu, a woman on a revenge run through the lands around Mount Yotei in 1600s Ezo, the northern frontier that becomes Hokkaido. It's a standalone story set about three hundred years after Ghost of Tsushima, so you don't need the first one to step in. New land, new fighter, same bones: ride, track, cut, breathe.
## Why the show leads with it This is the exact lane this show rides for. Single-player. Big world. Built to be lived in, not farmed for a season pass. No lobby, no meter filling up, just you and a map that respects your time. When a game like this pulls the biggest pre-order numbers of the year, it isn't a niche win. It's proof the quiet, one-player swing still moves the culture harder than anything with a battle pass stapled to it.
## The reception backs the hype Early reviews put it near the top of the year, scoring ahead of its own predecessor and landing in the top slice of releases critics recommend. Sucker Punch also runs a free multiplayer add-on, Legends, for people who want company after the credits, but the campaign is the point. The pitch never wavered: one story, told all the way through.
Tsushima made the case that a samurai open-world could go toe to toe with anybody. Yotei is the follow-through, and the numbers say the audience was already sold.
