Black fantasy at blockbuster scale doesn't come around often. This one arrived with the whole roster.
## What dropped The first trailer for Children of Blood and Bone — the adaptation of Tomi Adeyemi's bestselling West-African-inspired fantasy — landed and immediately trended, on a cast that reads like a lineup: Viola Davis, Idris Elba, Cynthia Erivo, Damson Idris, Thuso Mbedu, Lashana Lynch, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Amandla Stenberg. Reported for theaters January 15.
## Why the culture cares Adeyemi's novel became a phenomenon because it centered a world drawn from West African myth — magic, monarchy, and resistance, told through Black characters at the center rather than the margin. Getting that to the screen with this cast, unwatered-down, is what the culture has asked studios for.
