A movie opening is supposed to be a free ad for the game. For Resident Evil Requiem, the Zach Cregger film did the job in a smaller way than expected.
## The number Alinea Analytics estimates Capcom's Requiem, which launched Feb. 27, has passed $500 million in revenue. That's the fastest any Resident Evil game has hit that mark, and it's on pace to pass the RE4 remake's lifetime total of more than $600 million, per Wccftech and GamingBolt (@GamingBolt). This is an analyst estimate, not a Capcom figure. GamingBolt tags it as a rumor.
About 8.5 million players are tracked: PS5 48.1%, Steam 43.4%, Xbox 8.6%. Roughly 30.8% of PS5 copies, about 1.2 million, are physical.

## The movie effect Cregger's Resident Evil opened Sept. 18 to $108.3 million worldwide and holds 96% on Rotten Tomatoes. Most of the game's weekend bump came from discounts, and PS5 daily revenue actually dropped 4% over the opening weekend. Wccftech sums up Alinea analyst Rhys Elliott's read as "slightly-boosted bargain-bin volume, not a demand surge at full price." The movie "reactivated existing fans rather than recruiting new ones."

## The take Half a billion in seven months is a big number, and Capcom is on a run few publishers can match. But the movie numbers are the part the industry should pay attention to. A hit film brought old fans back at a discount; it didn't make new ones. With GTA 6 on Nov. 19 about to take everyone's money, publishers will be watching whether a movie can actually sell a game at full price.
