Jordan Brand did not name the Air Jordan 13 "He Got Game." Spike Lee did, by putting it on Denzel Washington's feet in a movie about a Black father buying his way back into his son's life with a pair of Jordans. The white, black and True Red 13 was one colorway in the first Jordan Brand season. After May 1, 1998, it was the one people remembered, and every retro since has been sold under a title that belongs to a filmmaker, not a footwear company.
The first Jordan Brand shoe
The 13 was the launch product of the newly spun-off Jordan Brand, announced September 9, 1997, and it carried Tinker Hatfield's black-panther concept: a hologram cat's eye on the ankle, a paw-print outsole with pod-like lugs, and a leather upper quilted like a big cat's musculature. Jordan wore it through the 1997-98 season, the "Last Dance" year, until the 14 showed up midway through the Finals. The white/black/True Red pair was a regular-season colorway with no nickname. Nike's own product calendar treated it as one of several.
Coney Island, summer 1997
Lee shot the film in the summer of 1997 with a $23 million budget, and the casting story is its own document of the era. Andscape reports Lee approached Ray Allen courtside at Madison Square Garden on March 4, 1997, auditioned roughly a dozen NBA players including Kobe Bryant, Allen Iverson, Tracy McGrady, Kevin Garnett and Stephon Marbury, and offered Allen the part on June 19, 1997 after three auditions, one of them a chemistry read with Denzel. Allen then trained with acting coach Susan Batson eight hours a day, five days a week, for eight weeks. Marbury turned it down with a line Lee never forgot: "I just didn't feel that I needed to audition to be me."
The shoes in the film are a Nike catalog. Complex counts thirteen pairs, from the Total Max Uptempo Jesus shoots in during the opening to the Foamposite Pro Pearl on the bench to the Air Hawk Flight in the closing one-on-one. Jesus Shuttlesworth's most-worn pair is the Air Max Uptempo '97. The Air Jordan 13 belongs to Jake, the father, who buys them after his release from prison. Denzel in a fresh pair of Jordans he cannot afford, walking Coney Island to reconnect with a son who hates him, is the image the shoe has never shaken.
The retro cycle
The market caught up slowly. The colorway came back in 2013 and again on August 4, 2018 (414571-104) at $190, Sneaker Bar Detroit notes, by which point "He Got Game" was the official retail name. Jordan Brand slated another return for summer 2026 under IR0973-100 at $210, per Sneaker Bar Detroit's release tracking, with a late update suggesting the high-top might arrive as a low instead. Whatever the cut, the price has climbed $20 per cycle on the strength of a scene Nike did not pay for.
Ray Allen, for his part, has worn the shoe in his own tribute moments, showing up to a Heat game in a "J. Shuttlesworth" jersey and He Got Game 13s, which Complex covered at the time. Allen was one of Jordan Brand's five original athletes. The character he played has outlived his own signature line, which he never got.
What the film did for Nike
Product placement in 1998 was a Nike specialty, and Lee had been in business with the company since the Mars Blackmon ads. But "He Got Game" was not a commercial. It was a Black director's film about a Black family, and the shoes in it were chosen by a costume department that understood what Coney Island looked like in 1997. Nike got thirteen pairs of screen time and a permanent colorway name. Lee got a movie that opened at number one, the first of his career to do so, per Andscape. The brand has been cashing the check for 28 years.
The take
The He Got Game 13 is the best argument that the culture names the shoes and Nike registers the trademark. Spike, Denzel and Ray Allen built the story; Jordan Brand retroed it four times and raised the price each time. Lee has never been on a Jordan Brand box. The film's title is, at $210. Ownership in this business runs one direction, and it does not run toward Fort Greene.
