It started as a Game of the Year, went to theaters, and now it's becoming a weekly show.
## What was announced Crunchyroll announced on X on September 24 that Sekiro: No Defeat airs weekly starting January 2027 as an 8-episode TV series, per ComicBook.com and Anime News Network. It streams everywhere except Japan, China, Korea, Russia and Belarus.
## Theatrical cut vs. series Studio Qzil.la adapted FromSoftware's Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, the 2019 Game of the Year. A shorter version played Japanese theaters starting in September, and the run was extended because demand held up. The TV version breaks that film into eight episodes and adds footage that didn't make the theatrical cut.
A new key visual shows the lineup players will recognize: Isshin, Genichiro, Owl, the Corrupted Monk, the Headless Ape and the Demon of Hatred. If you died to any of them 40 times, you'll know them.
## The Atlanta connection The US got an early look. No Defeat screened as the closing film at SCAD AnimationFest in Atlanta. We covered that lineup here, alongside The Proud Family's 25th-anniversary honors. A FromSoftware story getting its first US showing at a festival that honored Black animation history in the same week is the kind of overlap our audience cares about.
## Why it matters Game adaptations used to be cash-ins. Arcane, Edgerunners and Castlevania changed that, and now publishers pick studios the way labels pick producers. The FromSoftware audience is huge and demanding, and a lot of it grew up on samurai films and Wu-Tang's kung fu samples, the same references Sekiro draws from. Eight episodes is tight. If Qzil.la uses the extra footage well, this could be the best game anime since Edgerunners.
