Princess Mononoke in 4K. Five Nights.

GKIDS and Fathom are bringing a new 4K restoration of Miyazaki's 1997 epic to theaters Saturday through Wednesday. Dub and sub showings, restoration overseen by Ghibli's Atsushi Okui.

## What's happening GKIDS and Fathom Entertainment are putting Hayao Miyazaki's Princess Mononoke back in U.S. theaters for five nights, September 26-30, in a new 4K restoration. It's part of Studio Ghibli Fest 2026. Atsushi Okui supervised the restoration. He's been on nearly every major Ghibli project since Porco Rosso. Each screening ends with a clip from the featurette Princess Mononoke in the USA.

## The culture angle The English dub is its own piece of history: Billy Crudup, Claire Danes, Minnie Driver, Jada Pinkett Smith, Billy Bob Thornton, and Gillian Anderson as San's wolf mother Moro. The dub came out through Miramax in 1999, the same era Wu-Tang and RZA were putting samurai and anime in rap. Ashitaka's cursed arm, Lady Eboshi's gun-making town fighting the forest gods: it's a story about who profits when land gets stripped. Twenty-seven years later that still lands.

GKIDS closes out Ghibli Fest with the Spirited Away 25th anniversary and Spirited Away: Live on Stage. But Mononoke is the one to see on the biggest screen near you.
