Seventy-eighth Street and South Shore Drive has a new brown sign on it. It reads Dr. Donda West Way, and her son wanted to be the one to pull the cover off.
## What happened Tuesday morning, September 22, at 11 a.m., Chicago's 7th Ward held an honorary street naming for Dr. Donda West on the South Side, per CBS Chicago. Ye was there in shades. He didn't talk to press. Complex (@Complex) had the lineup around him: Rhymefest, GLC, Don C and Really Doe. Block Club Chicago and WGN both reported that he insisted on unveiling the sign himself, standing next to Ald. Greg Mitchell.
Mitchell hosted. He called her "a builder of people" and "a champion for Black creativity and intellectual excellence." Complex caught a moment where Mitchell changed what he was saying halfway through a sentence, apparently because Ye told him to, and the block loved it. Cook County Clerk Monica Gordon, Rhymefest (Che Smith, who now sits on the elected Chicago Board of Education) and GLC all spoke.
## Who she was, beyond "his mom" The rap internet mostly knows her as a voice on records. Chicago State knew her as the chair of its English Department. She taught there for close to 30 years and founded the Gwendolyn Brooks Center for Black Literature and Creative Writing. Dr. Garrard McClendon, a CSU professor, nominated her for the sign. At the ceremony he called her work at the school "transformative." She died in 2007 at 58.
So the sign doesn't honor a celebrity's mother. It honors a Black academic who built a literary institution on the South Side, and whose son turned into one of the biggest pop stars of the century. The order matters, and Chicago put it in the right order today.
## The records are the receipts Ye has been writing about her for twenty years, and her voice shows up in the work. "Hey Mama" on Late Registration was the thank-you note before the fame got loud. Donda (2021) was named for her and sampled her voice. Complex notes her voice closes out "Mama's Favorite" on BULLY. The Donda name also sits on the school, and the school is headed to an October jury trial. That's the brand side of the name. Tuesday was about the person.
## Why Rhymefest on the mic matters Rhymefest and Ye go back to "Jesus Walks," and they fell out in public. The Donda's House nonprofit Fest ran in her name was renamed in 2020 after that split. Six years later he's at the microphone at her corner, with Ye a few feet away. Neither man said anything to reporters about it, so don't read it as a reunion. But in Chicago, standing up at the same ceremony still counts for something.
## The Chicago run This is Ye's second big hometown moment in a month. He did two record nights at Soldier Field earlier in September. Up next are Jakarta on October 24, then Houston on Halloween. Stadiums pay. A street sign on 78th is something you can't buy, and it outlasts the tour.
