J. Cole Built His Own Shoe. Fayetteville First.

Five years after his PUMA run ended, J. Cole's first independent sneaker, the Dreamer Indie 5000, launches September 23 in his hometown. Made in Italy, no sportswear giant, no price announced.

Most rappers at J. Cole's level have a shoe deal. Cole had one and walked away from it. Today, September 23, he puts out his own.

## What he said "5 years in the making," Cole wrote. "Took my time to make sure I did it right. Designed, developed and manufactured independently." The Dreamer Indie 5000 launches first in Fayetteville, North Carolina, the city he's been repping since The Come Up. Pricing, sizing and a wider release haven't been announced. (HNHH, Sneaker News)

## The shoe It's retro basketball. Chunky cupsole, layered panels, sharp zigzag overlays that run from the upper down through the sole. It's made in Italy with Italian designers Cole has worked with the whole way. Sneaker News compared it to the PUMA Blaze of Glory, which is either an accident or a wink. Cole explained the delay in a fan AMA earlier this year: the shoe was finished and manufactured a while back, and a mistake on the boxes held it up. The clearest early look came through The Fall-Off Magazine, his own publication.

## The PUMA chapter Cole signed with PUMA at the start of the decade. They put out the RS-Dreamer and the Dreamer 2, and his last release with the cat came in 2021. The Indie 5000 has reportedly been in the works since that chapter closed. So this isn't a rapper taking a check. It's a rapper doing the part the check usually covers.

## Why it matters Owning the shoe works the same way as owning the masters. No partner means no one else controls the design, the timeline or the margin. It also means Cole ate the costs and the box delay himself. That's the trade every independent artist, beatmaker and brand makes. Starting in Fayetteville instead of a SNKRS raffle puts the hometown first. What the resale market does with it is secondary to the fact that it exists at all.
