Ed Boon has run NetherRealm long enough to know how to deny something without really denying it.
## What he said On Sept. 22, answering a post claiming a "AAAA" fighting game was in the works with NetherRealm and Insomniac, Ed Boon (@noobde) wrote: "100% false. Next rumor please." The next day he added "All false" to the claims that Injustice 3 and new Mortal Kombat titles were in external playtesting, per GamingBolt.
Then came the line people are still reading into. Asked about a new MK vs DC, Boon replied: "just because a game isn't currently being tested externally doesn't necessarily mean the game isn't in development."
## Where the rumor came from Earlier this month a listing turned up on the playtest firm Good Gamer Group for a "AAA fighting game" with 2D gameplay, testing in Culver City, where parent company Warner Bros. Discovery is based. GamingBolt flagged it Sept. 14, and people worked backward to NetherRealm. Other reports claimed Supergirl and Batwoman for the roster, and that the next DC fighter might drop the Injustice name. Some fans pointed to DC's DC K.O. tournament event, which featured Sub-Zero, as a possible source. All of that is rumor. Boon only denied the playtesting.
## The FGC read NetherRealm hasn't released a new game since Mortal Kombat 1 in 2023. That's a long time for a studio whose games anchor fighting-game nights in a lot of Black and brown neighborhoods, from Injustice at the barbershop to MK at the cookout. Boon's second reply is doing a lot of work. "Not in external testing" and "not being made" are two different statements, and Boon only made the first one. Something is coming. The question is whether it's a third Injustice or a new MK vs DC.
