Some anniversaries come with a trailer. This one came with a screenshot. That's a choice, and the numbers behind it explain why.
## The post Phantom Liberty launched Sept. 26, 2023. On the third anniversary, CD Projekt Red posted that it was hard to believe it had been three years since players first entered Dogtown, and invited everyone to check out "Heavy Hearts," a player's photo-mode shot. iXBT's write-up notes there were no sales figures, player stats or announcements attached. Just the picture.
## The numbers The receipts came earlier. On Sept. 2, CD Projekt said Phantom Liberty had sold 15 million copies in less than three years, counting copies sold separately and those inside the Ultimate Edition bundle, per RPG Site. The base game sits at 40 million, a mark the studio hit in July, per Push Square.
## Why a quiet post works When the game's been out for years and the expansion has that kind of sales, the community's photo-mode shots do the marketing. The studio's attention this week is elsewhere anyway: the Witcher 3 remaster went live Tuesday.
## What's next in Night City Still on the calendar: Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 on Netflix, Oct. 20, ten episodes with a new crew. No new Cyberpunk game news this week.
## The cultural read This game launched broken and got fixed in public. Three years after the expansion that finished the job, the studio can post a fan screenshot and let 15 million owners fill in the rest. That's what a comeback looks like when it's finished.
