The biggest number in the Physint story may be wrong.
## The $400 million claim After PlayStation walked away from Kojima Productions' spy game and Xbox picked it up, Chris Dring of The Game Business put the budget at around $400 million. That number spread everywhere.
## The pushback Per GamingBolt (@GamingBolt), on Sept. 27:
- Jason Schreier (Bloomberg) posted on ResetEra that he doesn't like to name exact figures without documents or multiple firsthand sources. But he said someone at Xbox with firsthand knowledge told him they signed Physint for "significantly less."
- Jez Corden (Windows Central) reported that sources with direct knowledge of the contracts put the Xbox figure "far lower." He also suggested $400 million may be what Sony would have been on the hook for if it hadn't canceled.
Corden's reporting says the Xbox deal is a "fraction" of that, includes film and TV licensing for Physint, and comes with "enhanced terms" on OD, Kojima's horror project with Xbox. None of these figures are confirmed. This is still rumor territory.
## The Xbox backdrop This lands the same week Satya Nadella called the Xbox team's "streamlining" "great to see," per GamingBolt. That's after 268 more layoffs and the Ninja Theory closure. Nadella said the next step is finding "the right sustainable business model."

## Why it matters Physint already has Bill Skarsgård attached. A $400 million bet during layoffs would look terrible. A cheaper deal that also gets Xbox a film and TV property looks like smart shopping. Kojima Productions has told people to be skeptical of the reporting either way, and says its relationship with Sony is still strong. Neither Physint nor OD has a release date.
## The take Xbox is cutting studios and buying prestige at the same time, and the only way that adds up is if the prestige came cheap. If Schreier and Corden are right, Microsoft got a Kojima spy game, a Hollywood pipeline and a sweeter OD deal for less than Sony was going to pay. That's a better story for Xbox than anything it put out itself this month.
