Xbox's biggest first-party release of the fall gets its report card Thursday morning.
## The date Per GamingBolt (@GamingBolt), Gears of War: E-Day reviews go live Thursday, Oct. 1 at 6 a.m. PT. That's the same day Premium Edition owners get early access. Reviews and the first real players arrive at once, so there won't be much time for spin in either direction.
## What it is The Coalition's prequel goes back to where the series started, and back to its horror roots. The campaign opens on Emergence Day, the night the Locust come up out of the ground. You play Marcus Fenix with Bravo Squad, and GamingBolt puts the campaign at about 14 hours.
## What changed This is the biggest gameplay shake-up in the series:
- Movement: sliding, and hopping gaps to flank.
- Weapons: new Weapon Mods and reworked Active Reload.
- Removed: wall-bouncing. The competitive scene built its whole skill ceiling on it, and it's gone.
- Versus: new Demolition and Crucible modes.
- Horde: a new Siege mode for 12 players on large objective maps.
On PC, GamingBolt reports GPUs need hardware ray tracing, and the headline spec is an RTX 5070 Ti.
## Why it matters November is the franchise's 20th anniversary. And this is Xbox's flagship landing weeks after another round of layoffs and studio consolidation, while GTA 6 preorders skew PS5. Xbox needs this one to land.
## The take Taking out wall-bouncing is a big call. It either shows The Coalition knows what Gears should feel like in 2026, or it drives off the players who kept Gears versus alive. The campaign will probably be fine; Gears campaigns usually are. Thursday's reviews will be about whether the new movement feels like Gears or like a Gears-flavored shooter. We'll know at 6 a.m.
