Two Meek Mill songs leaked over the weekend. Instead of chasing takedowns, Meek posted both himself on YouTube Sunday night. One of them is getting called his best street record in a while. The other has Reddit asking what happened on the hook.
## What dropped Per HotNewHipHop, "Philly Heathens" and "Am I Wrong" hit YouTube Sept. 28 with Meek acknowledging they were leaks. No streaming release, no rollout, just the songs.
"Philly Heathens" is the one people want on DSPs. It's Meek aimed straight at the violence in his city: the kids who lose themselves to it, the parents burying them. He sings the hook and it works. That's the Meek who made "Dreams and Nightmares" a Philly anthem, talking to the block instead of about it.
## The one that isn't landing "Am I Wrong" is a drill interpolation of Nico & Vinz's 2014 hit. HotNewHipHop called the beat dated, which you can forgive on a leak. The singing on the hook is what people can't get past.
Over on r/hiphopheads, one longtime fan said he's been with Meek since the Flamers tapes but "he makes some very odd choices sometimes." Another said the chorus had them scrambling for the volume. A few defended it as a blog-era throwback, and most agreed Meek's verses hold up and it's the hook that sinks it.
## Why it matters This is how leaks work now. Once the files are out, the artist can post them himself and at least control where people hear them. Meek did that. The flip side is he also put his name on a take he may have shelved for a reason.
Context matters too. Meek has spent the year fighting a lot of battles outside the booth, including the feud with DJ Akademiks. "Philly Heathens" is a reminder that when he locks in on Philly, he's still one of the most urgent voices in the city.
