Rockstar picked one outlet and gave it the keys to Leonida. Game Informer (@GameInformer) put its 14-page Grand Theft Auto VI cover story live this morning, Tuesday, Sept. 29, and the headline detail is a very Florida one: hurricanes are in the game.
Last week we covered the cover reveal. This is the follow-up with the actual details, 51 days before launch.
## What Rockstar confirmed The feature is Marcus Stewart's "Welcome to Leonida", built on interviews with Rockstar's lead designers. VICE's rundown (@vice) had the confirmed list within the hour:
- Hurricanes and tropical storms. Both can hit Leonida, with heavy rain, strong wind, lightning and water running off rooftops. Rockstar hasn't said how often they happen or whether they touch missions.
- Localized, persistent weather. Conditions can differ across the map at the same time, with a dynamic cloud system that runs from clear winter skies to afternoon thunderheads.
- Wind that moves things. Gusts push rooftop debris, ripple the water, bend swamp grass and move the characters' hair.
- 170+ animal species. That's 60-plus kinds of birds and 30-plus land mammals, plus fish and reptiles. Manatees, flamingos, pelicans and alligators are all named.
- Things to do. Base jumping, billiards, gyms, kayaking, mini golf, scuba diving, street and off-road racing, zoo visits, airboats and jet skis.

## The Florida of it all Vice City has always been Miami as outsiders picture it: neon, pastel suits, cocaine-cowboy mythology. The 2026 pitch is the real state, and weather is where that pitch lives or dies. Anybody from South Florida knows the pattern: a perfect morning, then a purple sky at 3 p.m. and a flooded intersection by 3:20. Every summer somebody's cousin is posting a hurricane tracker. A GTA with localized storms can have Vice City under water while the Keys stay sunny, and that's the most Florida-accurate thing Rockstar could build.
The wildlife count backs it up. For scale, Red Dead Redemption 2 had roughly 200 species, and that game was basically a nature sim with guns, as PlayFront (@PlayFront_de) pointed out. Getting close to that number in a modern, dense city game is a flex. And yes, the gators are official. Macca the Gator merch was never going to be a one-off.

## What's still unconfirmed - Storms and gameplay. No confirmation that hurricanes change missions, traffic, police or driving. Right now they're a confirmed system, not a confirmed mechanic. - Body changes from gyms. PlayFront reads the gym return as San Andreas-style fitness. The VICE rundown only confirms gyms as an activity. Treat the body-change angle as unverified until Rockstar or GI's full text spells it out. - Date activities. VICE says it appears Jason and Lucia can do couple activities like hiking. That's also not locked. - Performance. Still no resolution or frame-rate targets for PS5 or Xbox Series X|S.
## The take Rockstar doesn't do press tours, so every door it opens is on a schedule. In one week we've had the "Welcome to Vice City" sign on the Kaseya Center and the soundtrack rollout, and now this. It's not trailer-level hype. It's world-building, the stuff that decides whether you're still in Leonida 200 hours later. Hurricanes and manatees won't carry the hype cycle alone, but they tell you Rockstar studied the real Florida and not the postcard. Nov. 19 is when we find out whether the storms actually hit.
