HBO sat the most guarded rapper alive across from the most famous producer alive and gave them eight episodes. Charlamagne Tha God watched it and says he's pissed off. Not at Jay-Z. At Rick Rubin.
## What Charlamagne said HotNewHipHop wrote it up Sept. 28. Charlamagne's issue with Jay-Z In 8 is the chair across from Hov. In his view, Rubin's passion for hip-hop didn't come through on screen, his questions came up short, and because the questions came up short, Jay didn't give much.
That's a heavy charge from the one guy nobody can call a Hov hater. Charlamagne has spent years getting accused of carrying Roc Nation's water. Now he's the one saying the Roc's big prestige project missed.
## Why it's landing He isn't the only one. HotNewHipHop noted social media has been making the same point since the series premiered Sept. 18: the setting is gorgeous, the man is Jay-Z, and too many answers still come back polished.
The show has had real moments. We covered the Tupac and Biggie rift origin and Jay calling Ye one of the most brilliant creatives he's known. But those are headlines. The pitch was process: how Reasonable Doubt got built, how "99 Problems" came together, what the pen actually does when nobody's watching. That's the part people say they're still waiting on.
## The Rubin problem Rubin's method has always been the vibe: long silences, few notes, let the artist fill the room. It works in a studio. On camera, with a subject who has spent 30 years answering exactly what he wants to answer, silence just gives Jay more room to stay on script. A rap-literate interviewer pushes on the specific bar. Rubin tends to ask how it felt.
To be fair to both men, Jay-Z doesn't open up for anybody. Decoded was a book of annotated bars and he still controlled every page. Nobody should have expected a confessional. But when you get eight hours, fans expected more than one or two surprises.
## The take The series isn't over, so there's still time to land something real. But Charlamagne said out loud what a lot of heads were typing: the most important thing in a rap documentary is who's asking the questions, and HBO picked a legend who doesn't ask rap questions. Hov got his prestige doc. The culture is still waiting on the real interview.
