Sony announced October 1, 2026, that standard PS5 consoles get AI upscaling through Quick Spectral Super Resolution, or QSSR. It's live now in Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei.
What it is
Per the PlayStation Blog, QSSR uses a streamlined neural network built for the base PS5's hardware. It targets image detail and temporal stability, the shimmer and softness you notice in busy scenes. GamingBolt reports it's aimed at Performance Mode, where games trade resolution for 60 FPS. Sony says it came out of Project Amethyst, its collaboration with AMD, and will be offered to all PlayStation developers.
The honest limit
Sony is clear: PSSR on PS5 Pro remains "the gold standard." QSSR is the lighter version. Developers quoted by GamingBolt say it helps with fine detail in characters and environments, but nobody is promising Pro-level output. We don't have independent comparisons yet, so treat the visual gains as Sony's claim until Digital Foundry-style testing shows up.
Who this helps
Plenty of us never bought a Pro. If you're on a launch-era PS5, this is a free patch that makes the 60 FPS mode look less rough. That's the real story: the install base, not the spec sheet. The open question is adoption. Upscaling is only worth something if third-party studios actually use it.
If you play either game, update and flip to Performance Mode. See for yourself.
