Retirement announcements in rap have a shelf life. G Herbo's was shorter than most.
## The announcement On Instagram Live this week, per Complex, Herbo thanked fans for years of support and then said it plain: "I'm done with this rap shit, man. I will be retiring, I'm not dropping no more music for the rest of my career." The reasons were mental health and the room. "Rap is too draining. It's taking away from my energy. It's stressful. It's full of weirdos and snitches and shit and I don't wanna be a part of it." The plan: a restaurant, investing, maybe acting or a podcast. "Plus I've got a very large catalog that spans over the course of almost fifteen years so y'all can listen to that."
## The reversal Hours later, a studio reel. Text on screen: "I got everything I ever asked for off this rap shit." Caption: "I AINT NEVER QUIT @ NOTHING!" HotNewHipHop had the retirement; Complex had the walk-back, and iHeart ran both as one story, which is the right way to read it.

## Context he didn't say out loud Herbo is 30, with eight studio albums behind him and a 2014 mixtape, Welcome to Fazoland, that helped turn Chicago drill into an export. "Weirdos and snitches" is the phrase that will get clipped. He didn't name anyone, and we're not going to name anyone for him. He's also on Yung Miami's Watch Dis, due Oct. 23, so the catalog is still growing whether he calls it a career or not.
## The read An artist saying rap is draining is not news. An artist saying it on Live, to his own fans, and then reversing within the day is a window into what the business does to a person who's been in it since he was a teenager. Take the first statement as the true one and the second as the professional one. Both can be real.
