The scores are the good news. This is the other story from the same building.
## The score, briefly Per GamesRadar+, Gears of War: E-Day sits at 88 on Metacritic from 50 critic reviews, the best Gears since Epic's original trilogy (94, 93, 91) and above Gears 4 and Gears 5 (84 each) and Judgment (79). Pure Xbox and Eurogamer Germany gave it full marks; VGC's campaign review liked the shooting and found the Marcus-and-Dom grief story underdeveloped: "commotion over emotion." Premium buyers got in Oct. 1; everyone else, and Game Pass, on Oct. 6.
## The fear inside The Coalition VGC, summarizing Eurogamer's reporting, says staff are "on edge." Xbox laid off story director Juan Vaca last week, right after the game went gold, which one source called "very demoralising": "It's like you planned for a year on a meal for your family where everyone will be there and the day of, you get locked out of the building." The bonus is the sharper problem: staff have a contracted payout tied to the Metacritic score, due "near the end of October," and have to be full-time employees when it pays. Eurogamer understands people already laid off, including Vaca, will still get it if targets are met. Staff aren't sure: one said they "wouldn't put it past Microsoft." Microsoft declined to comment.

## The bigger cut This lands in the week Microsoft's second wave of Xbox layoffs went through: 1,600 jobs in the summer, another 1,600 planned by the end of the fiscal year, with the second round about 75 percent complete, per VGC. We covered the Halo-to-Activision reorg last month. Coalition staff told Eurogamer they now expect "the next wave, or being reorganised under Activision."
## "Xbox is not for sale" Asha Sharma to the New York Times this week: "Xbox is not for sale. We will do whatever it takes to set the company up for success, and we will look at the right partnerships, the right operating model and everything needed to achieve that." That answers The Information's summer report about a possible spin-out. Satya Nadella called her "streamlining" "great to see."
## The read An 88 is the number the bonus was written for. Whether the people who earned it are still on payroll when the check cuts is the number nobody at Microsoft will say out loud. This is the labor story under every "best in the series" headline this fall: the games are good, the studios are being reorganized while the reviews are still warm, and the CEO's reassurance is to shareholders, not staff.
