Roc-A-Fella's origin story gets retold every time one of its three founders sits in front of a camera. This week it was Dame Dash's turn, and the claim is that Jay-Z wanted distance so he could look like a businessman.
Everything below is Dame's account. We found no response from Jay-Z's side in the reporting.
## What Dame said Complex's Jaelani Turner-Williams reported on Oct. 6 that Dash made the remarks on the Sept. 29 episode of the YouTube show Quiet Part Out Loud, with the segment starting around the 55-minute mark. According to Complex, Dash said that in their final meeting, Jay-Z told him he wanted to be known as a businessman and couldn't be known that way with Dash next to him.
Dash also said L.A. Reid wanted a "businessman" in the room for a deal meeting, and that Reid told him Jay-Z didn't want Dash there. He called Jay-Z a "figurehead" and named Steve Stoute as someone making decisions behind the scenes.
## The claims that carry weight Two of Dame's claims go past image. He alleged that Jay-Z asked him to give up his rights to Reasonable Doubt, and that Jay-Z wouldn't walk the red carpet for The Woodsman with him. Complex presents all of it as allegation and says it did not independently verify any of it. We haven't either.
## The context Dash co-founded Roc-A-Fella Records with Jay-Z and Kareem "Biggs" Burke, and Complex notes he has criticized Jay-Z publicly around the anniversaries of Reasonable Doubt and The Blueprint. Jay-Z addressed Dash directly once, per Complex, in a freestyle at the Roots Picnic in May. A pattern of public criticism is context, not corroboration.
## Why it lands with our audience This is the ownership story inside the biggest success story in rap. Who held the masters, who was in the room, who got moved to the side as the money got serious. We've been tracking Jay-Z's side of the culture this week too, including the Ye and Jay-Z "Living So Italian" leak. The business of the Roc-A-Fella era is still being argued by the people who were there.
## The read One founder's version of a meeting only two people attended. Until Jay-Z or Burke weighs in, or documents surface, treat it as exactly what it is: a claim from a man with a long record of public grievances and a real stake.
