Two free tools hit producers on Oct. 2, and both go straight into a beat template. One shapes volume the way a sidechain does. The other puts a limiter on the way out.
## Pulse Ducker Per Bedroom Producers Blog, j.mp3 labs released Pulse Ducker as a free volume shaper. It ducks with envelopes instead of compression. The feature list: 16 curve options from smooth to gated, tempo sync, MIDI triggering, an audio-reactive mode, a low-band mode that ducks only below an adjustable crossover, an editable envelope, and up to 20 ms of lookahead.
## Formats and download macOS gets VST3 and AU. Windows gets 64-bit VST3. Linux gets x86-64 VST3 in beta. The developer's site offers the download with no account, email address or license key.
## Apogee Soft Limit Per BPB, Apogee's Soft Limit is free again after moving to Plugin Alliance. It's a limiter and saturator that recreates the analog peak-control circuit Apogee introduced with its AD-500 converter in the early 1990s. You need a free Plugin Alliance account and their installation manager. Formats are VST3, AU, AAX Native and AAX AudioSuite, on macOS 13 through 26 and Windows 10 and 11, with no iLok.
## What we haven't done We haven't tested either one. A spec sheet isn't a sound. Run a kick and a bass through Pulse Ducker at your usual pump, then A/B Soft Limit on your master against whatever you use now.
## The read Ducking is half of how a low end gets out of its own way. Free tools don't make the beat, but they take away the excuse. Download them, test them, and decide whether they earn a slot in your template.
