Between August 13, 1996 and July 15, 1997, Timbaland produced three albums that made every other R&B record on the radio sound like it was standing still. Aaliyah's One in a Million, Ginuwine's The Bachelor and Missy Elliott's Supa Dupa Fly were built on the same ideas: a beatbox where the drum machine should be, syncopation borrowed from drum and bass, a baby's coo or a cricket where a producer would normally put a hi-hat, and silence used as an instrument. The Bachelor turns thirty on October 8. The sound it introduced has not aged, because nothing before it sounded like it and everything after it tried to.
Da Bassment
Timothy Mosley was born in Norfolk on March 10, 1972 and graduated from Salem High in Virginia Beach, per Wikipedia. Missy Elliott introduced him to Jodeci's DeVante Swing, who signed Missy's group Sista to his Swing Mob label and moved the whole crew to New York and then Rochester. DeVante renamed him Timbaland after the boot. The Da Bassment collective under DeVante included Ginuwine, Static Major, Missy and Timbaland, and it functioned as an unpaid apprenticeship: DeVante got the publishing, the crew got the education. When Swing Mob collapsed, the education walked out the door with them.
Pony and The Bachelor
"Pony" came out July 30, 1996 and hit No. 6 on the Hot 100 and No. 1 on R&B for two weeks in November, per Wikipedia. Ginuwine, Timbaland and Static Major wrote it, and Timbaland has said the instrumental dates to 1989 with the song written and recorded in 1994, two years before release. The bass is not a bass; it is a processed vocal, a frog-croak that functions as the low end, with Timbaland's own mouth handling much of the percussion. The Bachelor followed on October 8, 1996 on 550 Music through Epic, recorded at Pyramid Sound in Ithaca, New York, with all music by Timbaland, per Wikipedia. It went 2x platinum by March 1999.
One in a Million
Aaliyah's second album, released August 13, 1996 on Blackground and Atlantic, was the first full statement. Timbaland and Missy handled nine of seventeen tracks, wrote, produced, and added ad-libs and raps, and the sessions ran from Detroit to the same Pyramid Sound room in Ithaca, per Wikipedia. It debuted at No. 20 with 40,500 first-week copies, peaked at No. 18, went double platinum by June 1997 and has sold more than eight million worldwide. "If Your Girl Only Knew" reached No. 11 on the Hot 100. The title track put a triplet hi-hat pattern under a 15-year-old's whisper and made radio program directors relearn what a slow jam was.
Supa Dupa Fly
Missy's debut arrived July 15, 1997 on The Goldmind, East West and Elektra, produced solely by Timbaland and, per Wikipedia, recorded in just two weeks at Master Sound Studios in Virginia Beach. It debuted at No. 3 with 129,000 first-week copies, the highest debut for a female rapper at that point, and went platinum by September 19, 1997. "The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)" sampled Ann Peebles' 1973 "I Can't Stand the Rain" and earned Missy Grammy nominations. The album was the first of the three cut in Virginia rather than upstate New York, which is when the sound got its name.
What the sound actually was
Three things. First, the drums were built from the mouth: beatbox patterns, tongue clicks and breaths, sampled and sequenced so the groove had a human's imprecision on a machine's grid. Second, the syncopation came from outside American R&B; the stuttered kick placements on "One in a Million" and "The Rain" owe more to UK breakbeat than to New Jack Swing. Third, the sound design was foley: crying babies, crickets, a horse's whinny on "Pony," placed as rhythm. Timbaland treated the studio the way a hip-hop producer treats a record crate, except the crate was his own throat.
The take
The Virginia sound was built in an apprenticeship that paid in knowledge and not in publishing, then executed on three records for three different labels, none of which Timbaland owned. Ginuwine was on Epic. Aaliyah was on Blackground, owned by her uncle Barry Hankerson, whose handling of her catalog has been its own decades-long story. Missy at least had The Goldmind, her own imprint, from day one, and that is why she is the one from Da Bassment who ended up with a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame plaque and her own masters.
Timbaland founded Beat Club in 2001 and has spent the years since trying to build the ownership he did not have in 1996. Thirty years after The Bachelor, the lesson is the same one Missy understood first: the sound is worth nothing if someone else holds the paper.
