Before the sitcom, there was a kid from West Philly with a DJ and a record deal on the line. Now there's a series about that.
## The announcement TheWrap reported on Oct. 6 that "215" is in development from Westbrook Studios and The Malar Group. It's the first project from their new partnership. Westbrook is the company Will Smith co-founded in 2019 with Jada Pinkett Smith. The title is the Philadelphia area code.
## The premise It's a coming-of-age scripted series set in late-1980s West Philadelphia. It follows a quick-witted teenage rapper, his DJ best friend and their friends as they chase a record deal while the local hip-hop scene grows. TheWrap says it's based on Smith's hip-hop rise and the formation of DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince.
## What's missing This is an early announcement from the companies themselves. There's no network or streamer, no premiere window, no writer named and no cast. The article doesn't say whether Smith is producing, writing or appearing. We're not guessing. Complex and the Philadelphia Inquirer also covered it.
## Why it lands Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince were one of the early rap acts to cross over to mainstream audiences. A scripted look at the DJ-and-MC partnership is a story about how rap got in the room, told from the block where it started. The hook for our side of the culture: the DJ is a co-lead.
## The read Development is the first step and plenty of projects stall there. Still, a series that treats the DJ as half the story is a good sign. Watch for a buyer and a writer.
