Four days before Heavy Is the Crown is due, Cordae has a federal lawsuit to answer. Per XXL, a Florida label called MMMG, which operates publicly as Art@WAR, filed in New York federal court on Thursday, October 15, seeking at least $25 million from Cordae, EMPIRE, Apeshit and Mass Appeal. These are allegations in a complaint, and none of the defendants had commented when XXL published on October 19.
What MMMG says
The core claim, as XXL reports it: Cordae's recording contract with MMMG is still in effect, so releasing the album with Anderson .Paak, and the single "A Good Day," violated it. The complaint lists copyright infringement, breach of contract and tortious interference, and asks for an injunction and a jury trial.
HotNewHipHop breaks down the money: $5 million tied to "A Good Day" under copyright law, $15 million for the alleged contract breaches, and $5 million aimed at the labels for allegedly helping cause the breach. It adds that MMMG describes an exclusive recording agreement dating to April 2018, says Cordae never got permission to release the material, and says he is withholding a revenue share from merch, touring and other work. MMMG argues a later STEM deal kept the contract alive after the Atlantic deal ended in 2025.
Why the timing matters
HotNewHipHop notes the suit landed eight days before the album. That is the usual playbook when a label wants leverage: file loud, file early, and make the distributor and the rollout team do the math. An injunction request is what would actually stop a release, and nothing in the reporting says a court has granted one. As of the XXL report, the album was still scheduled for Friday, October 23, on APESHIT, Mass Appeal and EMPIRE.
The read
Artist-label paper from the 2010s keeps resurfacing in the middle of the biggest weeks of an artist's career, and the independent-leaning, own-your-masters lane is not immune. We're watching two things: whether any injunction request gets heard before Friday, and whether the tracklist changes. We have no confirmation of either, and the claims remain unproven.
