Chance The Rapper won. Per XXL, a Cook County judge handed him a $1.5 million judgment against his former manager Pat Corcoran on Tuesday, Oct. 13. Billboard reported it Oct. 14. XXL followed Oct. 15.
## What the judge found Corcoran, known as "Pat the Manager," sued Chance for $3.8 million in commissions and unpaid managerial work. Judge James E. Hanlon Jr. went the other way. XXL reports he found Corcoran breached his fiduciary duties by secretly requiring side payments from merchandise vendors. The order: surrender those secret funds and refund the 15% merchandise commissions from that period.
In March, a jury had already sided with Chance on breach of contract and tortious interference. This ruling is the second trial. The final figures are set for a status hearing on Nov. 30, 2026, so $1.5 million is where things stand, not the last number.
## Why this one matters A manager sits between an artist and every dollar. When that person takes money from the vendors the artist is paying, the artist can't see it. That's the allegation the judge accepted here. If you've read our breakdown of how artists get paid, this is the other half: the leaks happen between the artist and the money, not only at the platform.
Chance has pushed independence for a decade. We covered what came after the no-label experiment. Independent doesn't mean protected. It means you need to read every line, because nobody else is.
## What we don't know The reporting doesn't say whether Corcoran will appeal, and we haven't seen a statement from his side. Wait for Nov. 30.
## The take Look, a win in court is a win. But the real lesson is quieter: audit the people who handle your money, and do it before there's a lawsuit.
