If you've ever loved a Final Fantasy logo, a character splash, that watercolor-feeling art that made the games look like myth — that's Yoshitaka Amano. Now he's getting his own anime, and the first trailer hits Anime Expo on July 3.
ZAN adapts DEVA ZAN, Amano's long-running dark-fantasy project. This isn't a one-off illustration. It's a universe he's been building across more than 300 original works, finally moving into animation.
Why the name carries weight
Amano is one of the most influential artists in the entire medium. His fingerprints are on Final Fantasy, on Vampire Hunter D, on a whole visual language that shaped how fantasy anime looks. When a creator at that level finally adapts his own world, that's not a niche premiere — that's a big-name event, even before anybody's seen a frame move.
The question is whether the animation can carry that singular style without flattening it. Amano's work lives in texture and stillness. Putting it in motion is the whole challenge, and the whole reason to watch the trailer.
