The original Truxton mastermind returns for the first new entry in 38 years - manga-drawn story, 18 chapters, out July 30.

Some legends stay retired. This one loaded back up. Truxton is back with its original creator at the controls - almost four decades later.

## What dropped Truxton Extreme launches July 30 on Switch 2, PS5, Xbox Series and PC (Steam and GOG). It's the first new entry in the series in 38 years, with original Truxton mastermind Masahiro Yuge - one of the Toaplan founders - back leading development at studio Tatsujin.

It runs 18 chapters of arcade action wrapped in comic-book storytelling, illustrated by manga artist Junya Inoue (Btooom!, DoDonPachi). You follow three pilots - Ash, Bergamot and Cyrilla - fighting a self-replicating alien machine race. Standard digital is $24.99, deluxe $29.99, with a physical release too.

## Why it matters Shmups are the roots - the arcade DNA a whole genre grew from. Yuge and Toaplan basically wrote the playbook that games like DoDonPachi and Ikaruga built on. A founder coming back for a proper new entry, on modern hardware, is a real event for people who care about where gaming came from. Adding Junya Inoue's manga art gives it a story layer the old cabinets never had.

## The read Retro revivals live or die on whether they respect the original feel while adding something new. The pedigree here is legit - this isn't a nostalgia cash-in with a random studio, it's the actual creator. The story mode and modern platforms are the fresh coat. If the core shooting still slaps, this is a preservation win and a genuinely good new game at once.

## The move July 30 across Switch 2, PS5, Xbox and PC. Twenty-five bucks for a legend's return with 18 chapters is a fair ticket - grab it if you rock with shmups.
