What's coming
Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis lands on PS5 February 12, 2027. It's a ground-up reimagining of the 1996 original, co-developed with Flying Wild Hog and built in Unreal Engine 5. Pre-orders are already live on the PlayStation Store. Sony revealed it at the June State of Play — Lara Croft rebuilt for a generation that never touched the tank-controls era.
Why the 1996 game matters
The original Tomb Raider was a landmark — one of the first games to make a woman the star of a big-budget action franchise, and it moved units the industry didn't think existed. Lara became a pop-culture figure before "video game character crosses over" was a normal sentence. Rebuilding that specific game, not a sequel, is a bet on the origin still carrying weight.
The remake question
Full-remake culture is everywhere now — studios mining their back catalogs because a proven name beats a new gamble. Sometimes that's preservation, sometimes it's a cash-out on nostalgia. Unreal Engine 5 and a real co-developer suggest this one's aiming for preservation. The tell will be whether it respects what made 1996 land or just repaints it.
The cultural read
Lara Croft was one of the first game characters to escape the console and become an actual icon — magazine covers, movies, the works. Handing her origin to players who only know the Alicia Vikander films is a real generational pass-off. Do it right and a 30-year-old character stays relevant. Do it wrong and it's another logo sold back to us.
