AnimEigo Digs Up ReLIFE and Antique Bakery At Otakon, the Disc Still Wins

Five newly licensed Blu-rays, a 4K Dog of Flanders restoration, and a preservation flex in a streaming world.

While the big studios chase same-day simulcasts, one company spent Otakon weekend quietly reminding everyone that owning a thing still matters.

What dropped

At its Otakon 2026 panel on August 1, boutique distributor AnimEigo and parent company MediaOCD announced five newly licensed home-media titles: Fumi Yoshinaga's Kodansha-winning slice-of-life Antique Bakery, a 4K Blu-ray restoration of the 1997 Dog of Flanders: The Movie, the long-out-of-print comedy ReLIFE, the 1995 Ruin Explorers: Fam & Ihrie OVA, and Kenji Nakamura's Welcome to Ibaru's Office.

The headline for collectors is ReLIFE: originally released by Funimation and unavailable for years, it returns as a comprehensive edition bundling the 13-episode series with its 4-episode OVA. Antique Bakery is dated for 2027, with Dog of Flanders following in late 2027 as a fresh 4K scan of the uncut Pioneer version.

Why it matters

Streaming licenses expire. Catalogs get quietly pruled. When a 2016 fan-favorite like ReLIFE can simply vanish from legal availability, the disc becomes the archive. AnimEigo has spent decades as anime's restoration house, and this slate leans hard into that identity: shojo landmarks, a Robert Loggia-dubbed classic, and OVAs most services would never bother relicensing.

There's a culture signal here. The convention floor is where the physical-media faithful still gather, and AnimEigo is speaking directly to them rather than to an algorithm. In a year defined by AI-dub controversies and licensing musical chairs, a company betting real money on scanning a 1975-lineage Dog of Flanders in 4K reads as a values statement as much as a business one.
