What's dropping
Onimusha: Way of the Sword hits September 25, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with a PC version to follow. Capcom put a demo out back on June 2 and dated the full game at the same June State of Play. This is the first new mainline Onimusha in roughly 20 years — the last real entry, Dawn of Dreams, landed in 2006.
Musashi in a cursed Kyoto
The setup: an Edo-era Kyoto warped by clouds of "Malice," with a young Miyamoto Musashi as the blade at the center. Onimusha always married samurai cinema to survival-horror bones — one-button-precise sword combat, demons pouring out of a beautiful period setting. Way of the Sword is Capcom betting that formula still cuts in 2026, on hardware that can finally render the dread the series was always reaching for.
Why a 20-year revival matters
Games disappear when nobody keeps the lights on. Onimusha sat dormant for two decades while its DNA — deliberate, weighty melee combat — got carried by other studios. Capcom pulling it off the shelf is the company betting that a name the culture remembers is worth more than another new IP nobody's attached to yet. Same instinct driving every remaster and revival right now: the audience did the remembering, and the rights-holder finally cashed in on it.
The lineage in the details
Onimusha wasn't a footnote. It moved millions on the PS2, it pulled in Takeshi Kaneshiro for a lead, it treated a samurai action game like a film production when almost nobody did. That ambition is the thing to watch here — whether Way of the Sword honors the series' cinematic streak or just reheats the name for a nostalgia bump.
Where it sits for us
Gaming beat with the revival-and-preservation angle up top, not a straight feature-list. The hook for the next person on the chain: Capcom let Onimusha sleep for 20 years — now it wants credit for waking it up.
