Nami Finally Gets the Lead.

Twenty-seven years in, One Piece hands a spotlight special to Nami — and it's already streaming.

One Piece has been running since 1997, and in all that time the spotlight has almost always followed Luffy. This summer it stepped sideways — to Nami, on her own.

## What it is One Piece: Heroines is a single-episode special that aired July 5, 2026 in One Piece's usual time slot, then landed on Netflix July 11. It's built entirely around Nami, with a brief appearance from Robin, adapting a light-novel story separate from the main arc. After 27 years, it's the first time the franchise built a whole story around one of its women.

## The story it tells It's a smaller, character-first tale: Nami buys a bad pair of shoes that wreck her feet, goes to return them, and gets pulled into a designer's world — asked to model a remade pair at a fashion show while a gifted shoemaker fixes the originals. No world-ending stakes. Just Nami, off the ship, in a story that's hers.

## Why fans have mixed feelings Here's the honest part: a lot of the fanbase wanted more. The special is one episode, not the full series some hoped for, and it leans light. That's the tension worth naming — a 27-years-in-the-making spotlight arriving as a single low-stakes outing lands as both a gift and a tease.

## What it signals Whether Heroines becomes a real strand depends on how this lands. The door's open for Robin, Vivi, and the rest of the women to get their own spotlights if the audience shows up for Nami's. For a franchise this size to even test a woman-led side story is a shift — small, but real, and worth watching.
