Nicki Minaj tried to build a members-only room this weekend. The internet, predictably, showed up to argue about it in the hallway.
The Launch
Minaj officially launched a subscription tier on X (formerly Twitter), giving paying followers access to exclusive posts, media and private audio Spaces. She announced it Friday, July 31, framing the paid tier as an intimate space for her core community: "It's for ppl who wanna have fun, think deeper, grow, learn, laugh, cry... Exclusive Spaces & Content. Welcome Aboard," she wrote, alongside an image of a Minaj-inspired Chucky doll in her signature pink wig.

The Backlash
Paid tiers are now standard for digital creators, but critics zeroed in on a multimillionaire superstar monetizing her timeline. "What happened to billionaire Barbie? Why are we begging for subscriptions on Twitter?" one user wrote, with others tying the move to her ongoing legal disputes. Whether fair or not, the "broke" narrative dominated the replies through Sunday.
The Barbz Push Back
Her fanbase moved fast the other way, posting screenshots of new subscription badges and defending her right to monetize direct fan access. "MAKE SURE YALL SUBSCRIBE. IT'S GOING TO BE A TIMEEEE," one urged. Minaj hasn't addressed the financial jabs — but launching direct-to-fan memberships puts her in step with a growing industry shift across X, Patreon and Instagram.
