What's coming
Marvel's Wolverine arrives September 15, 2026 as a PS5 exclusive from Insomniac Games. June's State of Play ran extended gameplay — gritty third-person combat, familiar faces like Jean Grey and Sabretooth, and a tone way heavier than the studio's Spider-Man work. Pre-orders went live right after. This is Insomniac betting it can do brutal as well as it does friendly-neighborhood.
The tonal risk
Insomniac built its Marvel reputation on Spider-Man — bright, kinetic, PG-adjacent. Wolverine is the opposite assignment: a healing-factor berserker whose entire character is violence and regret. Pulling that off means abandoning the house style that made them a billion dollars. That's the interesting part. The safe move would've been Spider-Man 3.
Why it matters for PlayStation
Sony's whole strategy is the exclusive you can't get anywhere else, and a mature Wolverine is a different kind of system-seller than another web-swinger. It widens who the PS5 is for. Nail the combat and the story and it's the fall's biggest console argument. Miss and it's a reminder that even the best studios can overreach.
The cultural read
Wolverine's been Hugh Jackman for two decades — one face, one voice, one shadow over the character. A game that's genuinely great is the first real chance to hand him to a new generation on their terms, controller in hand instead of a movie ticket. That's a bigger deal than the marketing lets on: it's a cultural icon changing hands.
